Not Impressed with the details. So disappointed., December 4, 2012

I explicitly waited for this case to become available and I am very sorry. If your primary concern is to protect from drop damage then the case is spectacular, as would be expected from Otterbox. But in all other areas I expect better for this price.

My main problem is that the wraparound edge on the screen side is too deep and instrusive. Some overall bulk was expected but I can’t help feeling that this is just an innefficient design flaw. I have a hard time using the touchscreen around the edges. I almost need a stylus now. It also seems unnecessarily bulky on the front, adding a 3mm lip all the way around the screen. That alone increases the total depth of the phone by 33%. Add another 3-4mm on the back (the case tapers slightly from top to bottom on the back) and the phone has almost doubled in size. And this is the commuter version. I shudder to think about how massive the Defender series might be.

Another advertised feature is the dust protection. This is half true. The headphone jack has a cover flap and the side buttons are covered but there is no protection at all for the USB or HDMI slots. I really don’t understand why not. I thought, “Maybe it was intentional so you could use the motorola car dock?”. Nope, it doesn’t fit in the dock anyway.

The case also comes with a screen scratch protector… but it is not specific to the RAZR MAXX HD. In fact, it really only cover the touchscreen area but leaves small gaps on the sides and large gaps at the top and bottom. The screen protector does not have any overlap with the case itself. The spaces inbetween have become dust magnets within a day. The plastic used also seemingly magnifies and highlights fingerprints making them much more noticeable requiring me to clean the screen almost obsessively. Why, after spending upwards of $40 do I need to then re-shop for a screen protector that covers the entire glass surface?

The cutouts for speaker, camera, and microphone are spot on. Other than the size, the asthetics are also well done.

The decision to return this thing was solidified when after installing the case, someone asked me, “What happened to your new phone?” thinking I had lost it and had reverted to an old blocky phone from 4 years ago.

It will protect your phone from drops but I can’t name another redeeming quality. Also, I had a terrible time ordering this directly from otterbox and then also in returning it. If you are going to try it out, I would buy it here on amazon or from another retailer instead of direct from otterbox.

Update 12/18/12: for those looking for a smaller profile protection, I am really very happy with the Diztronic case: Diztronic Matte Back Black Flexible TPU Case for Motorola Droid Razr Maxx HD [ONLY FOR MAXX HD MODEL] (Verizon) [Retail Packaging] and a skinomi screen protector Skinomi TechSkin – Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX HD Screen Protector Ultra Clear Shield + Lifetime Warranty

Another solid case from a solid company!, December 18, 2012

    Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)

In general, I like it a lot. Its the quality I’ve come to expect from OtterBox. I got the black color.

    Pros:
    - Fits like a glove. Very good fit and finish and attention to detail.
    - Appears to provide excellent protection. Feels very solid and protective.
    - Appearance is very business-like.
    - Not too bulky or heavy.
    - Volume and power buttons are covered by the rubber case, are easy to press and feel just right. My wife has the Defender case for her Droid RAZR Maxx HD and the buttons are very hard to press.

    Cons:
    - Does not have a rubberized dust cover for the HDMI and USB ports. However, does have a cover for the headphone jack. Not quite sure why they made that decision. My wife has the Defender case for her RAZR Maxx HD and it does have a dust cover for all ports.
    - Hard plastic shell is a bit too slippery in your hands.
    - Lint gets trapped on the edges of the screen and it can be difficult to clean. This is probably true of all cases.
    - Bottom corners are not fully protected by the hard plastic shell, but still probably offer enough protection.
    - Case completely covers the Motorola logo.

Good but missing one detail, January 20, 2013

This is my first otterbox case, I have had various experiences playing with friends and families otterbox cases though. The thing is I really like this case overall. The fit seems tight, the edges fit perfect around the screen in my opinion, and its at the perfect thickness right now to where I dont feel like its going to slip out of my hand. Plus regardless of the added bulk its a 650+ piece of equipment, thus the bulk is fittingly appropriate. Although I do agree with some of the other reviews that the color choices are pretty abysmal, the red is about a sunburnt metallic orange, the white and grey looks dull, and the all black is just all black. I got lucky at the verizon store I was at as the guy that ran the place allowed me to change out the different colored sleeves, so I now have the dark gray sleeve from the orange one with the black hard shell, and I left the black sleeve with the white one, and the light grey with the orange one. They all look much better in those combos, so if you get a chance take a look at a store and see if they’d allow you to do the same. Never hurts to ask. The one negative is like most reviews pointed out that there is no flap to cover the hdmi and usb port, which is a minor gripe, but I’d like something there to cover for dust and pocket lint. Great product, and great protection investment.
